07/27/2005: "Sleepwalking"
music: "Ain't there a child I can hold without judging"mood: Slow Unravelling
Since there's no real news to report this morning, I've decided to post a short catalogue of the things that still inspire/make me happy/bring a smile to my face in light of these dark, dark times. In no particular order-
1. Ricky Gervais/David Brent "Free Love Freeway" There's an Easter Egg on Disc 1 of The Office: The Complete First Series containing a full-length performance of the song. Contains the verse about the "pretty senorita," which is hilarious. I discovered it last night and it helped me sleep easier.
2. Reminiscing about my childhood - I've been thinking a lot of those earlier years (1-5) when nothing tragic ever happens, because you have no sense of what tragedy is. Sure, I had my fears - toys breaking, not being with my parents, imaginary demons, but there was always a sense of shelter, some place where I knew I was safe. I felt invincible then - if I skinned my knee, I'd cry about it, but eventually picked myself up.
I see children playing in the park and I envy them. More so than the guy next to me driving the BMW.
I remember being around people who always had my back - mom, francis and dad, when he wasn't at work.
I was a simpler monster wide-awake in simpler times.
3. Blur "Country House" music video - The video that almost broke up the band the first time around. Directed by YBA bad-boy Damien Hirst, this video finds the band running around a life-size Mousetrap gameboard and cavorting with models/pornstars posing as farm girls. Not as depressing as "No Distance Left to Run." For sure.
4. Waiting for the Babyshambles album - I haven't been this excited about an album since Pulp's "Different Class." "For Lovers" could be the single of the year and Pete Doherty could be the new Jarvis Cocker.
5. The Pogues ft. Kirsty Maccoll "Fairytale of New York" - Christmas never comes soon enough.
6. Friends and family - Because when the world turns its back on you, you get a good fucking sense of who your real friends are.
Okay, tried to get to ten, but I'm not going to strain myself with too much thinking today.
