My name is Terry and this is my blog.

I am currently living in Los Angeles.

I like films, music, and don't even get me started on long walks on the beach.

I don't read a lot of books, but am always fishing for book recommendations.

My parents are Vietnamese and I was born in America.

That's all you really need to know upfront.

06/22/2006: "This Year's Mushaboom"

The other day while I was editing a music video with my friend Mike, I took a quick internet break and while reading someone's blog, I came across the new Regina Spektor single, "Fidelity". A few days before, Mike and I were watching her video for "Us" and I was quite impressed with the song. When I first moved to LA, an old college friend who helped to land me my first job kept raving about Regina and after burning the CD onto my laptop, it went largely ignored.

To say the least the song floored me. The song starts off catchy enough, but at 0:48 I knew this was very very good. By 2:12 I had goosebumps and when the song I had already proclaimed it to be my single of the year. The song is a perfect melding of pop sensibility, smart, honest lyricism with a sentiment that hits its mark. So good, in fact, that I'm willing to forgive the double-negative of "I never loved nobody fully . . .” Think about it too hard and you lose the point. I guess it also makes me miss a certain someone.

I expect this to blow up and hopefully she'll play in LA sooner than later.

Hear it for yourself: Regina Spektor "Fidelity"

I was going to post her performance on Conan, but it looks like they pulled it off Youtube. A real shame because it was an stripped down performance with just her and the piano. Conan went as far as to say that it was the best performance he's seen in a while.

In other news:

The music video I was editing is almost finished and I should be posting links sooner than later.

Saw "The Black Rider" with my friend J, downtown, during the final weekend of its run in LA. I'm not big into musicals, but it was a phenomenal experience and turned me onto Tom Waits, who I never got into when my friends were trying to introduce it to me.

Picked up Cat Power tickets for the show next Wednesday at the Ford. The ad said that she was playing "solo" which I take to mean that she'll be playing sans the Memphis Rhythm Band. No worries, she'll be backed by the band when I see her in Austin.

Lastly, I apologize for the lack of posts. I've been quite busy as usual and a bit of a hermit. We'll catch up soon enough.
