12/10/2007: "ATONEMENT"
Last night I caught an 11 o'clock showing of Atonement. I don't sleep well on Sunday nights (never have, don't asky why) and I knew this coming week would be busy with dinners, screenings and company Christmas parties, so this would be the only time I would be able to see the film in its opening week. I saw the film at the Arclight, which on a Sunday night will set you back 14 dollars, plus 2 dollars for parking. I went by myself and bought a small decaf.
OMG. Atonement is by far my favorite film of 2007. Having been a fan of the novel and always skeptic when it comes to literary adaptions, I was blown away by the integrity of the screenwriter and director as film very much stays true to the novel's ambience and narrative style. But at the core of my attachment to the film is the chemistry between James McAvoy and Keira Knightly. My mouth was agape whenver the two were on screen. And that's not because both are strikingly beautiful, but the intamacy between the two was palpable.
I'm still trying to absorb all the emotions (yes, emotions) I felt while watching the film, and I hope to see it at least a few more times as the attention to detail begs repeated screenings. For anyone who was on the fence about seeing this film, I cannot recommend it enough. If you can go with someone you really love you're really into, more power to you.
And yes, I did get a little choked up at times. As my brother would say - "Soooo emo, Terry"
