My name is Terry and this is my blog.

I am currently living in Los Angeles.

I like films, music, and don't even get me started on long walks on the beach.

I don't read a lot of books, but am always fishing for book recommendations.

My parents are Vietnamese and I was born in America.

That's all you really need to know upfront.

What's Your Last Name So I Can Fucking Myspace You?

mood: rollercoaster

Three posts for the month of May should raise some serious concerns about the need for this blog. In my defense, my neighbor has turned off his/her WIFI router and hence I have no internet access at home (and I just don't feel like blogging at work).

So things have been really up and down lately. Been going out, been staying in, blah blah blah. This weekend I saw X-Men: The Last Stand and The Proposition. I highly recommend The Proposition, and while it's still early, it may be my candidate for best film of the year, with United 93 running a close second.

More later.

The H is O

music: Dixie Chicks - Travellin' Soldier
mood: waxing nostalgic

The plane tickets have been booked and the motel is confirmed. The ACL Rumors Blog (via The Dallas Observer Blog ) announced a slew of acts today. Some to my delight, others not (I'm talking to you John Mayer).

Since my last posting, Ted Leo and The Pharmacists were confirmed as well as some other bands that weren't on my wish list but nevertheless I will go and see barring any conflicts (Kings of Leon, Nada Surf). In the listing of recently named acts (someone must have had access to the festival print ads to run this Thursday), the following wishlist bands were confirmed:

The Raconteurs (YES!!!), Gnarls Barkley (fuck yeah!), Cat Power and the Memphis Rhythm Band (I finally get to hear "The Greatest" live), Secret Machines, Okkervil River (now I can sing along to the songs), Jose Gonzales (better fucking play "Heartbeats"), Feist (MUSHABOOM!!!), Kasey Chambers (remember "The Captain" from the Sopranos?).

Here were some others that I'll see if I can:

Gomez (I still listen to "Bring it On"), Wolf Parade (not to be confused with Wolf Mother), Sparklehorse (good live, saw him open for the Flaming Lips back at the 930 club), Aimee Mann (could have seen her at the 930 club, but the ex-missus and I sold our tickets because of an impending snow storm), Damien Rice (I should probably listen to "O"), and Stars (I missed out when they played with the Elected).

The big question is whether or not I decide to stand thru Van Morrison.

The line-up is pretty solid but until the final list is not out until Thursday so I can't start celebrating yet. Now is the time to really cross my fingers for The Strokes, Yeah Yeah Yeah's, Broken Social Scene, Voxtrot, Primal Scream and The Dixie Chicks. Seriously.

Part of me says that the Bonnaroo Festival looks better. They got Radiohead, Beck, Bright Eyes, DCFC, My Morning Jacket, and the Neville Brothers (bitches!!!). And everyone thought it was a hippie festival.

Tex Mex, Tex Mex. Keep repeating it and it will make you feel better.

In other news I saw "Americanese." More on that when I get to it.

ACL Wish List

music: "Cool" Gwen Stefani (Richard X remix)
mood: I Just Watched Mission Impossible 3 and Liked It

Quickly before I go to bed -

The line-up for the Austin City LImits Festival will be announced later today. Because of complications surrounding Hurricane Rita last year, the ACL fest is kindly allowing last year's ticket holder's who couldn't make it out there to use their tickets for this years festival (I'm sure there's a shorter way of writing that, but hey, it's late).

Here is my wish-list of bands:

The Yeah Yeah Yeahs: I have yet to see them and I'm in love with the new album

The Strokes: Again, I'm in love with their new album and the last time I saw them they were still touring in support of "Is This It").

Cat Power: Oh, Chan Marshall. You were sick when I tried to see you in LA.

Jenny Lewis: Because she has yet to return my phone calls. Plus I saw "The Wizard" the other day and have some questions.

The Elected: "I'll Be Your Man" is shaping up to be my choice for single of the year.

Ghostface Killah: Why not?

Voxtrot: I've been listening to their EP's and they're quite good.

Fiery Furnaces: Starting to get into them.

Broken Social Scene: See above.

Feist: In secrecy I like to dance around to "Mushaboom."

Radiohead: Supposedly theey are confirmed as NOT playing the festival but who knows, Christmas could come early . . .

Arcade Fire: Because I couldn't see them last year when they played.

Okkervil River: Because they're from Austin, they have been writing new material and I now have "Black Sheep Boy" committed to memory.

Dixie Chicks: I won't explain.

Babyshambles: Yeah fucking right.

Dirty Pretty Things: More likely than Babyshambles.

Bright Eyes: Because it would only be my third time.

Sigur Ros: See above.

Jose Gonzales: Please insert quiet Swedish singer songwriter here.

Death Cab: Sure, they played last year, but Ben Gibbard needs to keep busy.

Supergrass: The British need to represent.

Emmylou Harris or Dolly Parton: I'll take either one.

Joanna Newsome or Mirah: The younger versions of the above.

Ryan Adams: Stop writing new songs and start playing them.

Primal Scream: When's the last time the played the States? They have a new album coming out and their new single "Country Girl" is excellent.

The Stills: They need to support a new album.

Tilly and the Wall: See above. Plus I was blown away when I saw them open for Jenny Lewis.

The Raconteurs: They're playing Lollapalooza, so maybe they'll hit this one up.

Wilco: Seems unlikely as Son Volt is confirmed

Ted Leo: He seems to be available all the time.

Spiritualized: New album coming out soon. Unlikely, because I think Jason Pierce hates the sun.

M.I.A.: An odd choice for Austin, but hey, we're equal opportunity employees. Diplo would be a bonus.

The Spinto Band/The Secret Machines/The Duke Spirit/The Like: Every festival needs a good buzz band.

Gnarls Barkley: Shit would be crazy, forilla.

My Morning Jacket: I really need to hear "Off The Record" in the blistering sun, drunk.

And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead or Against Me!: My 2 favorite live bands.

Ultimate Wish List: A reunited Pulp, the Jesus and Mary Chain, A reunited Stone Roses, Morrissey, a reunited Blur, a reunited Pavement, David Byrne (for you Liam), Teenage Fanclub, Gwen Stefani, Kanye West, The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Dashboard Confessional, a reunited Phish (because I would never go to a Phish Concert on its own merit), a reunited (please insert defunct brit-pop act or lo-fi indie rock pioneer).

AND the "PLEASE STAY AT HOME" List

She Wants Revenge, The Cobra Snake (okay, not a band per se, but just as obnoxious), anything related to Steve Aoki, Giant Drag, Linkin Park, Panic at the Disco, AFI, She Want Revenge, Audioslave, Widespread Panic, TOOL, Rob Zombie, God Smack, Fall-Out Boy, Ashlee Simpson (I don't need to see your new nose), Sarah Maclachlan, Tori Amos, dumb-fuck band on Fred Dursts Label.

So let's see how I do tomorrow when the final list comes out. I have to admit that the list of confirmed acts is not so exciting (Tom Petty, Matisyahu, Guster, Jon Mayer, Los Lonely Boys, anyone) and their are only a few bands I'm actually interested in seeing (The Flaming Lips, The Shins, Iron and Wine, New Pornographers, Massive Attack).

(sigh) Let's hope the Tex Mex is as good asd everyone keeps saying.

Lastly, it's been rumored that the Dave Matthews Band may be playing the festival. No. Please, please please don't let this happen, powers that be. You would not want to see Terry choke a bitch.

P.S. I'll be at the "Americanese" screening Thursday, May 11, at the ARATANI/JAPAN AMERICA THEATRE in Little Tokyo as part of the Visual Communications Film Festival. I worked on the film as an extras/volunteer coordinator. I also lent my voice as an off-screen student and did some extras work on it. $20 for the screening and dessert gala.
