My name is Terry and this is my blog.

I am currently living in Los Angeles.

I like films, music, and don't even get me started on long walks on the beach.

I don't read a lot of books, but am always fishing for book recommendations.

My parents are Vietnamese and I was born in America.

That's all you really need to know upfront.

This Year's Mushaboom

The other day while I was editing a music video with my friend Mike, I took a quick internet break and while reading someone's blog, I came across the new Regina Spektor single, "Fidelity". A few days before, Mike and I were watching her video for "Us" and I was quite impressed with the song. When I first moved to LA, an old college friend who helped to land me my first job kept raving about Regina and after burning the CD onto my laptop, it went largely ignored.

To say the least the song floored me. The song starts off catchy enough, but at 0:48 I knew this was very very good. By 2:12 I had goosebumps and when the song I had already proclaimed it to be my single of the year. The song is a perfect melding of pop sensibility, smart, honest lyricism with a sentiment that hits its mark. So good, in fact, that I'm willing to forgive the double-negative of "I never loved nobody fully . . .” Think about it too hard and you lose the point. I guess it also makes me miss a certain someone.

I expect this to blow up and hopefully she'll play in LA sooner than later.

Hear it for yourself: Regina Spektor "Fidelity"

I was going to post her performance on Conan, but it looks like they pulled it off Youtube. A real shame because it was an stripped down performance with just her and the piano. Conan went as far as to say that it was the best performance he's seen in a while.

In other news:

The music video I was editing is almost finished and I should be posting links sooner than later.

Saw "The Black Rider" with my friend J, downtown, during the final weekend of its run in LA. I'm not big into musicals, but it was a phenomenal experience and turned me onto Tom Waits, who I never got into when my friends were trying to introduce it to me.

Picked up Cat Power tickets for the show next Wednesday at the Ford. The ad said that she was playing "solo" which I take to mean that she'll be playing sans the Memphis Rhythm Band. No worries, she'll be backed by the band when I see her in Austin.

Lastly, I apologize for the lack of posts. I've been quite busy as usual and a bit of a hermit. We'll catch up soon enough.

Without A Scratch

As we all know, yesterday was the day of the devil. While I was horribly superstitious about the whole day, I didn't really go out in public for another reason:

For those who do not know, I have decided to grow my hair out for a while and hence I may be confused for an emo kid (as opposed to lazy adult).

Who decided to make this a national holiday. I wonder if my friend Metro Sea is okay.

A Renewed Interest in Drinking

music: The Stills - Without Feathers
mood: Compositing

So I guess I had a good weekend. I say "guess" because the weekend was filled with ups and downs.

Ups:

1. Nice dinner on Friday with friends at Bossa Nova. Our friend Josh is leaving town to shoot a documentary so it was nice to send him off with good food, excellent company and general hilarity. I had the gnocchi with pink sauce and plaintains, always a favorite.

2. Spent most of the day on Saturday editing my friend Mike's music video. We pretty much hammered out a good portion of the song, considering a lot of important narrative decisions (and song choice) weren't made by the time we started cutting. By the end of the session we were confident about how the cut would turn out as we continue the editing process.

3. For dinner on Saturday night I met up with some old friends from my DC APA Film days - Henry who was in town on vacation and Gene who came up from San Diego. We had all-you-can-eat Korean BBQ and it was the bomb. Juicy, juicy cuts of meat and the kim chi was perfect, in my opinion.

4. Ended the night at Cha Cha Lounge in Silverlake where I met up with another friend. I also unexpectedly ran into a childhood friend, Nick, who was celebrating his 26th birthday. I had around 5 drinks and felt good for the rest of the night.

5. Sunday afternoon I stopped by Nick's BBQ Birthday Bash and had a drink. Despite various amounts of alcohol all weekend, this was the first weekend in a long time where I drank all three days. Good times.

6. Ended the weekend with the season finale of The Sopranos. It's the best show on television, probably because it's one of only two shows I watch (the other being Big Love).

And now the Downs:

1. I get fucking pulled over by a cop on Sunday for: not having my registration stickers on my car, not having proof of insurance, and the worse offense was the fact that my registration had expored. Now, for an Asian, I am not a horrible driver, so I thought it was kind of unwarranted for the cop to pull me over whilst on I-10 going west bound. He was driving next to me, pulled ahead of me for a bit, then decided to fall back behind me and that's when the lights went up. So I'm thinking that he must have had second thoughts about pulling me over, because, quite honestly, he has a lot of better things to do than to waste his time and my time.

Seriously -

a) the reason I don't have registration stickers because some dick stole them off my car and I didn't feel like dealing with the DMV until the renewal process

b) I have not been able to register my car yet because I haven't had time to do the required smog check. The week that I actually had time to do the smog check, my car was in the shop (because it got broken into)

c) my proof of insurance was at home because I was taking care of some paperwork for the break-in.

So now I got a court date in July and have to really get my ass out of bed early to get the smog check done.

2) So the main reason I went to the Cha Cha Lounge was because my friend and I were supposed to meet some girls that we had met at the previous week at the MOCA Night Vision opening. To make an embarrassingly long story short -they bailed. Honestly, I didn't really care for them, but it was more of the fact that they had made these arrangements and did not follow through.

I've never considered a bar a place to meet females and nowadays the pressure coming from friends, family and co-workers for me to meet new people has become obnoxious. It's just like a shark tank at these bars and clubs and I'm slowly coming to the conclusion that the kind of girl I want to date on a serious level is not the kind that goes to bars/clubs seeking to meet guys like me there.

I feel like I could go into a tirade about how dating sucks for me and how it seems impossible for me to meet cool females, but I'll have to save that for a more coherent essay. In the end, the bottom line I keep coming back to is I just need to stay busy, doing my best to keep myself happy by hanging out with great friends, enriching my mind (not as gay as it sounds), being creative and learning to take better care of myself better.

3) Lastly, despite a promise to myself made a year ago, I caved in bought breakfast at McDonalds on Saturday before the editing session. I had even planned on it for Sunday untilthe cop pulled me over and I missed the 10:30 cut-off. I mean - 2 Suasage McMuffins with Egg for $3 - who can resist? Not I.

Ugh, so that was the weekend. Now I have a horribly busy week ahead of me. Wish your boy luck.

U of L

music: New Order - Temptation (Secret Machines Remix)
mood: fingers tapping

I feel like I'm pulling a C average at the University of Life. This quarter life crisis shit is no joke. Work is piling up and I can't seem to say no to people when asked for favors. The problem is that I cannot see what's actually wrong for me to fix. Sure, I could eat better, sleep better and be more productive, but these days I'm most content with daydreaming and zoning out.

I'm sure it's a combination of many things, but for now all I can do is trudge along. How and where does one cash in their karma points, because I could use a big break. ack.

In real news, I just finished editing some ice cream cake commercials and am in the process of editing a music video. A bunch of us shot some crazy stuff last weekend and now I'm back in the trenches cutting it together. I'm hoping it's going to be tight and once it's done I'll see about linking it here.

Also, I'm in the middle of a great book - Amsterdam by Ian McEwan. Good shit. I had just finished reading his other book, Enduring Love, which was kinda depressing, but enjoyable nonetheless.

Lastly, because I'm such a youtube fanatic, I found this little gem the other day. It's one of my favorite pop songs and possibly one of my favorite songs about relationships and stuff like that.

Enjoy.
