My name is Terry and this is my blog.

I am currently living in Los Angeles.

I like films, music, and don't even get me started on long walks on the beach.

I don't read a lot of books, but am always fishing for book recommendations.

My parents are Vietnamese and I was born in America.

That's all you really need to know upfront.

Small steps. Giant leaps.

music: Cornered, the boy kicked out at the world. The world kicked back, a lot fucking harder.
mood: Get it together, boy.

Today was a busy day, but I managed to accomplish some small, personal tasks. The first being the creation of a temporary splash page (www.vklj.net). In keeping with the spirit of item number 6 of the July 27th blog entry, I've posted one of my favorite pictures of myself. That sounds a bit narcissistic, but it's the truth. Simpler times, me and my chicken gun.

I also called one of my best friends in NYC, Danilanh, who helped me "talk things out." She made a good point about keeping up with appearances, so I decided to cross 2 more items off the to-do-list - shave and 200 crunches.

It's about 10:40 pm and I'm ready for some sleep. Tomorrow is "spirit day" at work and my co-worker has branded it "band t-shirt day." So I'll be busting out the Pavement t-shirt, which will then require me to explain to both the kids and adults who the hell they were. "They had this hit 'Cut Your Hair' and if you heard it, you'd probably recognize it, blah, blah, blah." I could make it all a bit easier by wearing my Dave Matthews Band t-shirt, but, oh wait I don't own a DMB t-shirt, because I can't stand that stuff. No offense to white people.

Last thing - I saw Bad News Bears with Doldermite Thursday night. I'll be posting a review sooner than later. Expect some ranting about childhood, my experiences with the great game (or lack of), and some thoughts about fatherhood.

Good night and take care of yourselves.

Sleepwalking

music: "Ain't there a child I can hold without judging"
mood: Slow Unravelling

Since there's no real news to report this morning, I've decided to post a short catalogue of the things that still inspire/make me happy/bring a smile to my face in light of these dark, dark times. In no particular order-

1. Ricky Gervais/David Brent "Free Love Freeway" There's an Easter Egg on Disc 1 of The Office: The Complete First Series containing a full-length performance of the song. Contains the verse about the "pretty senorita," which is hilarious. I discovered it last night and it helped me sleep easier.

2. Reminiscing about my childhood - I've been thinking a lot of those earlier years (1-5) when nothing tragic ever happens, because you have no sense of what tragedy is. Sure, I had my fears - toys breaking, not being with my parents, imaginary demons, but there was always a sense of shelter, some place where I knew I was safe. I felt invincible then - if I skinned my knee, I'd cry about it, but eventually picked myself up.

I see children playing in the park and I envy them. More so than the guy next to me driving the BMW.

I remember being around people who always had my back - mom, francis and dad, when he wasn't at work.

I was a simpler monster wide-awake in simpler times.

3. Blur "Country House" music video - The video that almost broke up the band the first time around. Directed by YBA bad-boy Damien Hirst, this video finds the band running around a life-size Mousetrap gameboard and cavorting with models/pornstars posing as farm girls. Not as depressing as "No Distance Left to Run." For sure.

4. Waiting for the Babyshambles album - I haven't been this excited about an album since Pulp's "Different Class." "For Lovers" could be the single of the year and Pete Doherty could be the new Jarvis Cocker.

5. The Pogues ft. Kirsty Maccoll "Fairytale of New York" - Christmas never comes soon enough.

6. Friends and family - Because when the world turns its back on you, you get a good fucking sense of who your real friends are.

Okay, tried to get to ten, but I'm not going to strain myself with too much thinking today.

Hit the ground running

music: Pulp - Bad Cover Version
mood: Holding Up

This is a start. Come back as things will be changing constantly. I need something to occupy my time.

Recent events: Went to see Jon Brion at Largo on Friday with my good buddy Matthew and his two friends . Amazing show. Jon plays all the instruments, i.e. he loops the drums and piano, and then plays guitar and sings over it all. He played "Waterloo Sunset" on guitar only. I almost cried.

On Saturday I took a trip down to the OC with Keith, Matt W, and Andy to visit Matt C, who was having a BBQ. Ate some really good chicken and ribs, lit off some sparklers and asked Matt and his buddies a lot of questions about being in the Marines.

Sounds like a busy weekend, but at this point in time I'm just doing my best to get out of the house.
