My name is Terry and this is my blog.

I am currently living in Los Angeles.

I like films, music, and don't even get me started on long walks on the beach.

I don't read a lot of books, but am always fishing for book recommendations.

My parents are Vietnamese and I was born in America.

That's all you really need to know upfront.

Jarvis Rocks with the Kids

Last Thanksgiving I was lamenting about how the Wyrd Sisters performance in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire was dramatically cut from the film. While I have not checked out the DVD release to see if the full perfomance was included, a conversation with a friend about the film this morning prompted me to do a seach on Youtube (where else?). Two dudes talking about Harry Potter - we're cool like that!

Looks like this clip of "Do the Hippograff" was uploaded very recently. Too bad the full performance of "Magic Works" is not available. Enjoy!

Look Who Decided to Sober Up

I think this is pretty recent. Dances better than Crouch, and seems to hold his own against the obnoxious Jonathon Ross.

Yes Yes Yes

I will admit that I was skeptical about this when I heard about it at an AFI screening of "Infernal Affairs" where director Andrew Lau told the audience that he was meeting with Scorsese to discuss an American remake. After watching the trailer all I can say is that I am super-excited. I think this is one of those remakes that will surpass the original.

I wonder what people think of the songs used in the trailer? I was talking to a friend who works on the business side of the film and he was telling me that he saw 3 different versions of the trailer and said they chose the one with the worst song for the end. I feel like I want to disagree (tho not having seen the other versions) because, while it does fall into the power-rock ballad category, it serves the images, editing and overall tone of the film. I won't spoil it by mentioning what song, so watch it and see for yourself.

I will spoil it for you in saying that it is awesome to hear "Gimme Shelter" in the beginning, as the Rolling Stones very rarely let people use their songs for trailers, unless you're Bill Gates (Windows) or Ted Demme ("Can't You Hear Me Knocking" was used in the "Blow" trailer, but I think he was able to use it because his wife had a connection to Mick Jagger). Did anyone notice that an orchestral version of "Gimme Shelter" was used in the new Alfonso Cuaran trailer for "Children of Men"?

Lastly, if you're in LA, do yourself a favor and see the brilliant documentary "Gimme Shelter" playing at the Aero Theater in Santa Monica, August 25th along with "Monterey Pop." Funny Story - I once wrote a paper about both of those documentaries for a film writing class. It was either those two or one of them and "The Last Waltz." I got an A on the the paper. I was the fucking greatest.

Maybe the story wasn't that funny.

Yeah, YouTube Saved My Life pt. 2

Two of my favorite things put together: Toothpaste and Broken Social Scene's "Ibi Dreams of Pavement (A Better Day)". It warms my heart to see an Asian girl getting her groove-on to BSS. Real posts coming soon, I swear.

Circumstances Can Be Cruel

The last three World Cup matches of the weekend seem to represent how I feel as the long weekend comes to a close. After what could have been a brilliant week, slowly fizzled out and now I have a three-day work week ahead of me. I'll recap the the week over the next few days as it was pretty exciting there for a moment (Superman Returns, Cat Power, my friend's short film screening, and Inbetween Days at the LA Film Festival).

I always empathize with the losing team. Sadly, it's my opinion (and the opinion of many others, I believe) that these teams really brought their brightest hopes to the games, only to see them dashed because they simply did not play as well as they could have played.
