My name is Terry and this is my blog.

I am currently living in Los Angeles.

I like films, music, and don't even get me started on long walks on the beach.

I don't read a lot of books, but am always fishing for book recommendations.

My parents are Vietnamese and I was born in America.

That's all you really need to know upfront.

Yeah! What! OOKAAYYY, Mr. Potter!

Lil Jon vs. Mr. Potter - Friday Night. I left the wizardry at home, but the glasses are on top of my head, hence the bad hairstyle. A few more are up at the flickr thingy.

I'm Not Gay, But . . .

I'm posting this for three reasons:

1) I am a regular subscriber to Vanity Fair

2) This year I got to see The Black Rider whilst it was in LA and it was the best theater experience, ever.

3) I like Brad Pitt as an actor

If anyone can explain this to me, please hit me up.

Try this one, Smarty Pants

Check out this fun game. Paper geniuses 3M and a couple of other companies I never heard of made little movie vignettes with stationary-related products and you have to guess them. I got about 14 of them and caved in and googled the answers. Number 9 is unbelievably difficult, but here's a hint: the colors of the smaller magic markers should give it away . . . .it's also the debut film of a 90's auteur who set the scene for edgy-cinema with sharp dialogue . . .

Ingenius, thanks to miraclemax for the link.

In other news, my Halloween costume is now complete. Maybe I'll throw up some pictures next week.

Distant Relative of a One Sean Combs

I avoided this for the longest time, but I caved in today as the dam of curiosity finally broke:

At least they got it right and put a few Asians on this thing. My reluctance to try this when everyone else was doing it is twofold - 1) I don't photograph well (ever) and 2) I'm not good looking. At all. I'm glad they didn't match me up with Bruce Lee or worse yet, William Hung.

This reminds me of a great self-deprecating joke. So I'm at the grocery store picking up some Hamburger Helper, a 6-pack of Amstel light, some toilet paper, and hamburger meat and the cute female cashier is like "Back to the bachelor pad, huh?" and I'm like (nodding to the items on the belt) "What gave it away?" and she goes "You're fucking ugly."

Ba-dum Chhhhhh.

Current Obsessions

music: deboradeboradeboradeadadadadadadadada

Here's a short list of current obsessions as of right now:

The Prestige - I saw this last night and I can't stop thinking about it. A lot of plot twists, surprises, but generally a well crafted film with great acting and story. Go see it before someone spoils the ending for you. If you've already seen it, check out what a friend of a friend wrote about it. The comments are interesting too. Isn't it great when a movie sticks with you and makes you ask questions? Kinda like the time I saw White Chicks.

Sweet Corn Tamales - We had these at work today. I'm not the biggest fan of Mexican food and was definitely never into tamales, but these were soo fucking good. Thanks to Concrete Andrea for the introduction!

This Song - I've recently discovered the brilliance of Marc Bolan, tho I was a fan of "Hot Love" when I first heard it used in the film Breaking the Waves. This is an acoustic version of "Debora" I found on a tribute to John Peel. Those bongos are madness!

I'm Into Music, Too, You Know

As many of you may already know, I'm really into music. I like everything from Chopin to Lisa Lisa and the Cult Jam. In terms of contemporary stuff, I'm down with The Used, Taking Back Sunday and the wide musical ocean inbetween.

Range, dog. You gotta diversify. That's why I am now contributing some of my musical musings to this site. It's run by bunch of college graduates, some grad students, and someday - Dr.'s and lawyers - http://vsatan.blogspot.com/

Discover something new.

RE-UNITED

music: Spaceball Ricochet
mood: 2L2Q

So here is part two of "Photographic Evidence that Your Boy Is Still Alive in SoCal."

Taken a few weeks ago at the San Diego Asian Film Festival. From l-r - Yours Truly, Mr. Doyle, Mr. Wyman and Mean Gene. We all used to run the DC APA Film Festival together. Yours Truly is now out in LA trying to stand on his own two feet, Mr. Doyle is a superstar network technician and is still involved with the DC APA Film Festival, Mr. Wyman is now head of programming at the DC APA Film Festival and Mean Gene is the programming director for the SDAFF Festival.

Despite the somber demeanor, we're all really good friends.

Unfortunately, I don't have a picture of the OTHER big reunion of the night, but I will substitute a song that represents the general (and I use that term loosely) sentiment that I felt that night and the on the long drive home to Los Angeles.

The Best I Can Do For Now

And while we're on the subject of being re-united, here's a remix of one of my favorite hip hop songs. My kid brother had this on a mix tape during my college years and I pretty much tried to steal it from him at every chance (this was during the birth of the MP3 and I was not as savvy as I am today). Luckily a year or two after I heard the song I was able to find the single in a used record shop in Toronto. Still holds up and the instrumental break in the middle really sounds like Oasis's "Whatever." Look it up yourself.

Sexier

One more post before I call it quits for the night - I cannot get this song out of my head - sounds like Robbie Williams is picking up the slack where Timberlake failed with "Sexyback" (admit it, you were a little dissapointed when you first heard it")

Quick Thoughts

music: A Certain Romance
mood: Don't feel like talking for too long . . . .

Major things are happening/have happened that deserve more attention, but here are some quick things before I forget:

Last week I got to meet Katherine McPhee at my office. She's as pretty in real life as she is on TV. Here's a tidbit you might not know about her: She owns a small dog.

I've seen "The Departed" twice in the theater now and I think it's the best film of the year (other great films of the year - Half Nelson, Science of Sleep, United 93, The Proposition and Superman Returns).

On Friday I caught a double-header of The Passenger and Blowup (Antonioni). I put off seeing Blowup for the longest time because I wanted to see it on the big screen and sure enough it paid off.

This week I want to see The Prestige and Marie Antoinette. Any takers?

My parents will be going to Vietnam for the month of November. My cousins getting married, but I have a feeling they will also be wife-scouting for my brother and I. Are there any Viet Kieu's out there that endorse this kind of thing?

I am 2 elements short of completing my Halloween costume. Mission to be accomplished this week. (No I am NOT going as Ethan Hunt).

I am very close to giving up on "Studio 60" The first 2 episodes were interesting enough, but by the 3rd episode (when they started doing skits) I found it horrendous. There are only 3 good things about this show - 1) Matthew Perry 2) Bradley Whitford 3) the DRAMATIC writing. Everything else is sub par or simply sucks. Amanda Peet is miscast, Steven Weber is horrible and D.L. Hughley is unwatchable. Why aren't Evan Handler (the bald straight guy from Sex and the City) and Lucy Davis (Dawn from the UK version of The Office) put to better use? I've only seen the first episode of "30 Rock" and kinda like it so far.

Did anybody else happen to catch "I Pity the Fool?" My boss forced me to watch bits of it in his office the other day and now I am forcing it upon the receptionist. Mr. T says ridiculous things like "This company needs some fuel-injected motivation" (referring to a used car company with low morale) and "You know what I do with couch potatos? I mash them up!" It's actually a very funny show.

I really can't wait for the new My Chemical Romance album.

Am I the only one who doesn't get what the big deal is with the The Hold Steady? Craig Finn is the American Jarvis Cocker? What a joke.

Did anyone see last Thursday's episode of The Office? The last 3 minutes were absolutely brilliant as it represented how reunions of that sort should be: civil, positive, light, humorous, andthey should end with an awkward goodbye as opposed to a false promise to keep in touch or see each other, as there's really no need (or is there?). I'm crossing my fingers for Pam and Jim and my fingers are still crossed for other things too.

Lastly, I got a new nickname here at work, but I'm not telling what it is.

Karaoke Machines

This is part one of "Photographic Evidence that Your Boy Is Still Alive in SoCal."

Taken with Concrete Andrea, after I ripped thru "9 to 5" (yes, I know all the fucking words). La Cita downtown, Monday night last week. Photo snapped by Micheli, Inc, courtesy of andrealaphoto.

My head looks funny.

Hello Chicken, Moo Cow home?

I promise my Halloween costume will be just as good, but it's always nice to see Francis out of his element. (photo by anarkywarrabbits)

p.s. How does one secure an Aunt Jemima costume? (Oh No He Didn't !)

UGH

Been feeling quite useless lately. Today I tucked in my shirt to rave reviews at work. Last night I sang "Stars Are Blind" at karaoke.

Oh, you should have been there. Oh, where have you been.

---EDIT---

I did a total of 3 songs last nite. Here are clues to the other 2:

2nd Song - A duet with a former member of the Eagles and a former member of Fleetwood Mac. Unfortunately I sang BOTH parts.

3rd Song - This upbeat ballad went to number 1 in 1972. The artist goes by an alias and was born in Tallahassee, Florida. His other hit was "Don't Expect Me To Be Your Friend."
